What to Expect on Your First Driving Lesson
Starting your driving journey is an exciting milestone, but it's completely normal to feel nervous before your first lesson. Not knowing what to expect can make those nerves even worse.
The good news is that your first driving lesson is designed to be a relaxed introduction to driving. Your instructor will guide you through everything step by step, and there's no pressure to be perfect.
Here's what you can expect during your first driving lesson with Top Driver Driving School.
Before the Lesson: What to Bring
Before your first lesson, make sure you have:
- Your provisional driving licence (you cannot drive without it)
- Comfortable shoes with a flat sole (avoid heels or thick-soled trainers)
- Glasses or contact lenses if you need them for driving
- A bottle of water if you like
Wear comfortable clothing that doesn't restrict your movement. Avoid long coats or bulky jackets that might make it harder to check your mirrors or turn around.
Meeting Your Instructor
Your instructor will pick you up from your chosen location, usually your home. They'll introduce themselves and help you feel at ease before you even get in the car.
At Top Driver, we believe the first few minutes are important for building trust. Your instructor will explain how the lesson will work and answer any questions you have.
Don't be afraid to tell your instructor if you're feeling nervous — they're used to it and will adapt the lesson to suit your comfort level.
The Cockpit Drill
Before you start driving, your instructor will teach you the "cockpit drill" — a routine to set up the car properly. This includes:
- Adjusting your seat so you can reach the pedals comfortably
- Setting the mirrors (interior and both door mirrors)
- Adjusting the headrest for safety
- Fastening your seatbelt
- Making sure the doors are closed properly
This routine will become second nature after a few lessons, but your instructor will guide you through it carefully at first.
Learning the Controls
Your instructor will explain the main controls of the car while it's stationary. In an automatic car, this is simpler because there's no clutch or gear stick to worry about.
You'll learn about:
- The accelerator (gas pedal) — to speed up
- The brake pedal — to slow down and stop
- The steering wheel and how to hold it correctly
- The indicators and how to signal
- The handbrake (parking brake)
Your instructor will let you practise pressing the pedals gently while the car is stationary so you can feel how they respond.
Your First Time Behind the Wheel
When you're ready, your instructor will take you to a quiet area — usually a residential street or car park — where you can practise without too much traffic.
During your first lesson, you'll typically learn:
- Moving off safely
- Stopping smoothly
- Basic steering
- Checking mirrors before moving
Don't worry if it feels strange at first — everyone feels the same way. Your instructor has dual controls, so they can take over if needed. You're in safe hands!
How Long is the First Lesson?
At Top Driver, we recommend booking at least a 1.5-hour lesson for your first session. This gives you enough time to:
• Get comfortable with the instructor and the car • Learn the basics without feeling rushed • Actually practise driving
A 1-hour lesson can feel very short once you account for introductions and explanations.
After the Lesson
At the end of your lesson, your instructor will give you feedback on what you did well and what to focus on next time. They'll also answer any questions and help you book your next lesson.
It's normal to feel tired after your first lesson — concentrating on so many new things takes energy! But you'll also probably feel proud of yourself for taking the first step.
Tips for Your First Lesson
- Get a good night's sleep the night before
- Don't drink too much caffeine — it can make you jittery
- Ask questions if you don't understand something
- Don't compare yourself to others — everyone learns at their own pace
- Relax and enjoy the experience!
